Seamless roaming is Intel's vision-giving users uninterrupted connection to the Internet and enterprise networks as they move through their business day. Taking the next step toward becoming an always-connected wireless company, the Intel Communications Technology Lab, Intel IT, and the Intel Communications Group built a proof-of-concept wireless site in an Intel office building. We set up 25 employees with secure, high-speed, mobile Wi-Fi data connectivity for computing and high quality Voice over IP (VoIP) for telephony. Our previous analysis suggested significant benefits to widespread enterprise-level adoption of wireless technologies, including: Lower capital, operational, and service expenditures for wireless networks Employee productivity gains for always-connected users Enhanced user experience In this proof-of-concept, we wanted to identify the benefits and challenges of implementing a completely wireless network and to test 802.1x Wi-Fi Protected Access* (WPA) security protocols as a replacement for a virtual private network (VPN) model. We successfully set up the network, experiencing some expected and some unexpected challenges along the way. Employees enjoyed the convenience of additional mobility, and despite some concerns about quality of VoIP and some connectivity problems across subnets, more than three-quarters of surveyed employees expressed interest in migrating to a wireless system. We plan to do a second, much larger proof-of-concept that involves hundreds of employees at another Intel site, adding features and service levels more closely tied to our enterprise requirements and creating a blueprint for an enterprise-level wireless implementation.
